Wilderness Medicine

Our wilderness medicine educational opportunity is structured as a ‘mini-fellowship’ under the direction of Dr Zina Semenovskaya, who is fellowship trained in Wilderness Medicine at Stanford University College of Medicine. Dr Semenovskaya has extensive experience in Global health, tropical Medicine and practice in austere environments

This longitudinal elective experience takes place over the course of 2-3 years of residency and the resident works at their own pace on many of the requirements. The educational experience includes:

Participation in wilderness medicine journal club - (anticipate 8-10 wilderness medicine journal clubs throughout the academic year)

● Participation in Summer wilderness retreat (Tahoe)

● Participation in Winter wilderness retreat (Tahoe)

● Participation in Conservation Wilderness Conference (attendance and teaching)

● Attending the Tahoe Forest Wilderness Medicine Conference

● Preparing and giving lecture to Sugar Bowl ski patrollers

● Participation in MedWars

● Obtaining Advanced Wilderness Life Support certificate

● Completing a study of publishable quality that is related to wilderness medicine

● Writing a textbook/educational chapter on a wilderness medicine topic

● Participation in wilderness medicine event (e.g. Mt Everest base camp clinic, ultramarathon support, etc), depending on time commitment and preparation

Wilderness Medicine Electives are also available and lead by Dr Semenovskaya and Dr Anne Walker

Residents may participate in 2-4 week block electives exploring concepts of wilderness medicine and practice in austere and limited resource environment

Global Health

Global Health electives are available for 4 week blocks through a variety of NGO partners; (travel at resident own cost)

2. International Surgical Health Initiative. (Multiple)

3. Himalayan Health Exchange. (Northern India/ Himalayas)

4. African Flying Doctors. (Nairobi, Kenya)

5. Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. (Johannesburg, South Africa)

6. Hospital based elective in Israel (Several hospitals in Tel Aviv and Ashdod, Israel)
